Darwin Dogs is a not for profit organisation with a charitable purpose formed in 2014. They provide Assistance Dog dog training to adults with mental health conditions or on the autistic spectrum, who have their own dog, under the age of 3, and can demonstrate a need for specific training, tailored to their individual needs, conducted in their own home or other location considered to be safe. Each client's dog is specifically trained for them.
Scooter was trained by Louise Williamson the owner and head trainer of South Coast Dog Training School, affiliated with Darwin Dogs. His training took approx 18 months to successfully complete. He had to pass 3 levels of assessment to become a fully qualified assistance dog and be recognised under the Equality Act. Now Kirstie and Scooter can go virtually anywhere together. Scooter had to learn to conduct at least 3 tasks specific to Kirstie's needs. Kirstie has Complex PTSD. The tasks Scooter performs are Blocking people from all sides of Kirstie in public places, providing deep pressure therapy by laying across her lap when she feels anxious or overwhelmed, nudging Kirstie's face to bring her back from being in a disassociated state and sleeping on Kirstie's pillow during the night and waking her up when she has nightmares.
